Phase One

The above image is how are current urban rail system looks, including the proposed expansion to Portishead and the reinstatement of the Henbury Loop.

Line One – Blue Line - Keynsham to Severn Beach Line Via Temple Meads

Line Two – Green Line – Yate to Weston Super Mare Via Temple Meads

Line Three – Orange and Grey Line – Henbury to Portishead Via Temple Meads

Option One – Continue to use diesel trains. This is the worst option due to carbon emissions.

Option Two – Electrify these lines. This would be the most expensive option.

Option Three – Build Electrical Charging Stations around 4 to 5 km apart. Charging will take 30 to 60 seconds. Charging will also take place under braking. This is lower cost than full electrification and quicker to implement and will not disrupt current trains. The train trams are suitable to run on existing rail tracks.

Create extra stations at St Annes (blue Line), Ashley Down, Lockleaze, Winterbourne and Coalpit Heath (Green Line) and Pill, Ashton Gate, Ashley Down, Lockleaze, Arena, Charlton Halt and Henbury (Orange Line).

The new stations could be added at any point in the process, allowing the tracks to be used with the new tram trains immediately, and the new stations can be added at a later date, creating a fully flexible approach.

These lines will continue to use Temple Meads as the main hub.
